Four filmmaking workshops conducted at Qatar University

Bill conducting a workshop

Bill Megalos and John Anderson conducted two workshops each at the Ibn Khaldoon hall of Qatar University. The workshops presented were “Workshop 1-How to find and tell your story” where Bill showed that a great topic for a film doesn’t mean that you have a story. This workshop took the attendees through the necessary research methods and taught them the questions they need to ask that will lead them to finding and selecting the right characters and shaping their story so that it can find and captivate its audience.

“Workshop 2-Developing the right style and making the right choices for your story” where John showed that the best films are stories told in the best possible way for that story. This workshop explored different documentary styles and techniques, (including cinema verite, narrated films, personal filmmaking, use of graphics and animation, interviewing techniques and styles, comic elements, etc) and examine their strengths and weaknesses.

The workshops were well attended and we even had to turn a few students away. The feedback suggested to have longer versions of these types of workshops as they get to learn a lot from the people who are actually in the field. A total of 29 women and 17 men which included students and faculty members attended.
