Notice: Fraud Alert

NOTICE 2: WARNING:  Fraud alert from the U.S. Embassy in Doha’s Regional Security Office regarding university and training degrees:

The U.S. Embassy in Qatar has been made aware of a recurring fraud scheme in which a telephone caller will claim to be a U.S. Embassy representative and attempt to solicit payment with regard to an education or training degree (to either process, validate or cancel a degree), often threatening legal action if money is not received. The caller will often “spoof” phone numbers to make it appear as if the call is originating from the U.S. Embassy in Doha.  Please note that this is a fraud scheme and that the caller is not a U.S. Embassy representative nor calling from the U.S. Embassy. No U.S. government entity, including the U.S. Embassy in Qatar, will ever contact you requesting payment for a university degree or scholarship service.  Furthermore, the U.S. Embassy in Qatar, EducationUSA, or U.S. Department of State cannot independently verify any educational institution nor certify any educational degree and/or transcript.  If you ever receive a phone call, message or email seeking immediate payment for a university degree or asking for personal information, be suspicious.  Do not pay these individuals and inform them that you will report the call to the police. If you receive a similar call, please notify the Qatari Ministry of Interior via a local police station or via the MOI Cybercrime Combating Centre hotline number 6681-5757 or email to cccc@moi.gov.qa.

Notice 1: The American Embassy is issuing the following fraud alert. Emails from an unknown sender, identifying themselves as “Kerry Collins,” have been reported from several vendors throughout Qatar. This email states that it is officially from the Embassy of the United States of America and requests equipment or materials (most recently “solar water pumps”). This notice is to inform the public that this is a fraudulent email from an unknown source. It is not affiliated with the U.S. Embassy or the United States Government. Please disregard these emails as they are scams. Should you receive one of these fraudulent requests or if you have encountered other, similar scams, please contact the embassy at DohaSecurity@State.gov
