August 22, 2023

The U.S. Embassy is proud to highlight the success of Dr. Nasser Sahim Al-Jassim, Deputy Director of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, who participated in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) titled “Promoting Social Change Through Music.”  The U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) facilitated the program that took place from June 24 – July 18, and featured 19 talented musicians from around the world.  Showcasing how music genres reflect the diversity of the United States, the exchange program took Dr. Al-Jassim and other participants to New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Santa Fe, and New Orleans.

The three-week program, which examined music production, management, and talent scouting techniques, culminated with performances at the New Orleans Jazz Museum.  Dr. Nasser’s remarkable performance of a song by Sita Hagobian during the event garnered significant attention.  A video of the performance can be found here on the New Orleans Jazz Museum’s YouTube page.

Dr. Nasser expressed his gratitude for the opportunity stating, “Participating in the IVLP program was an inspiring experience that allowed me to connect with fellow musicians from diverse backgrounds. This exchange not only enriched my musical perspective, but also highlighted the potential of music to drive positive social change.”

The IVLP is a flagship ECA program that provides emerging leaders from around the world with the opportunity to learn about U.S. culture, society, and institutions.  The program is designed to foster mutual understanding and cooperation between the United States and other countries.
