The Fulbright Program:
The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. It is broken down into three programs: the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program; the Fulbright Specialist Program; and the U.S. Fulbright Scholars Program.
Fulbright Visiting Scholar:
The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program is a consecutive three- to nine-month program in which Qatari scholars teach, conduct research, or pursue a combination of both at an American college or university in the United States starting in September of every year. Qatari Scholars residing in Qatar and holding doctoral degrees in academic disciplines including arts and humanities, commerce and finance, science and technology, journalism and media, education, and other fields are eligible to apply for the program.
The mission of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of other countries and to provide educational exchange experiences to individuals not previously afforded such an opportunity. Fulbright not only serves the individuals selected, but provides value for the scholar’s home institution, as well. Fulbright Scholars serve as cultural ambassadors and should be prepared to reside in the United States for a consecutive three- to nine-month stint and to speak about their country, culture, and research to academic and community groups.
The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program has provided thousands of scholars with the opportunity to conduct post-doctoral research at U.S. institutions; establish professional contacts in their field and make long-lasting friendships with colleagues in the United States; to develop collaborative research relationships with U.S. scholars; and to enhance their scholarly publications and other contributions with research conducted in the United States. Finally, for many scholars, the Fulbright Program offers an opportunity to expand one’s network of contacts and research opportunities for collaboration. By doing research, teaching, and pursuing other scholarly interests in a completely different environment, scholars are encouraged to seek out new opportunities, exchange best practices with their peers, and broaden the scope of and collaboration on research globally.
The award funds international airfare, accommodations, living expenses, health insurance, and incidentals. The Fulbright Scholar Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Fulbright Specialist Program:
The Fulbright Specialist Program offers academic and research institutions as well as think tanks the opportunity to host American professors and professionals (with a PhD preferred) to serve as expert consultants on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects for a period of 2 to 6 weeks. Eligible institutions should express their interest to the Public Affairs Section of the Embassy who will advise them on the nomination and selection process. Specialists can be requested by name, or otherwise the Fulbright office can nominate someone based on the requested criteria. Specialists may conduct up to two separate visits as part of their grant.
The Fulbright Specialist program is a cost-sharing program where the host institution should be prepared to provide the Specialist with lodging, meals, and in-country transportation, either through monetary or in-kind contributions, and handle the visa/visa renewal process (if needed). The U.S. Department of State will cover the cost of international airfare, the Specialist’s honorarium, incidental expenses, and health insurance.
To have a Fulbright Specialist this fiscal year, the deadline to apply is any time between now and September 1, with the project having to be completed by September 30 of the following year.
Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program:
The U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program offers opportunities for American scholars to conduct research, lecture, and/or consult with other scholars and institutions abroad. The U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program offers a number of semester- and year-long research and/or teaching grants for college and university faculty members at all career stages. Generally, a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree is required to apply for a U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program grant. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
